These movies together do something odd that not many horror films ever did, and still don't do.
They actually explain a lot more of the character. Sure, we all knew Fred Krueger was a child killer who was burned alive after being let off. We know Jason Voorhees was mentally retarded and drowned at camp. We know Eliot Spenser was a War Pilot before he found the Lament Configuration.
Now to add the depth, how many here knew Sadako was always a quiet shy girl? How many knew she had an eerie stage presence? How many knew that despite her shyness and unconscious tendency to make others jealous of her, she still tried? How many knew she was in love for a while?
Hell, who knew she could heal people just by touching them?
Oh, and did anyone else know that she was haunted, and that the innocent girl was lost before the legend of the curse even began?
Honestly, that's half the fun of this little collection. As with other horror films, things about the "antagonist" are..Oh yeah..that's the other fun bit.
You see, in other horror films, the main "icon" of it all is a villain, some horrible demon, a zombie, or a malevolent spirit and people only bother to learn about them while being chased around running for their lives.
Welcome to a lovely little reversal where viewing of all four films paints Sadako as a protagonist.
Okay okay, granted her agenda is more than a little questionable, and she's scary/evil as sweet freak all a lot of the time...but that's all after the curse.
After all, how many horror lines devote an entire film to explaining the character's good life?
