Note; manga editions contain a sequel, a midquel, and a prequel to the Ring series...consider it "The Ring 3"

I liked the English version okay, but not the second. Couldn't make through the second. They said it was supposed to be scarier*yawn*. So I guess I should rent the Japenese version. Maybe I can sit through it.

First was scarier. Second had that atmosphere in it that just made you think "OMG, something huge and freaky is gonna happen!" .......and then nothing did happen. So it'd keep you on the edge of your seat without actually scaring you.
(Sadako climbing out of the well like that at the end of Ring II was cool though...reminded me of a fast-motion Gollum)

Is the Japenese scarier than the American?

Effects might make the american scarier, but I think the japanese have the edge on them with writing scripts.

Plus the japanese storylines all go into Sadako being a bisexual hermaphrodite that shares a symbiotic relationship with the smallpox virus.
Rather twisted storyline, but I'll point out that after the Ring II, she actually impregnates the professor's assistant and essentially resurrects herself in the "Casket in the Sky" storyline.

I only saw the first Ring, but I found it creepy enough.

Second Ring has practically no jump-out-of-your-seat moments, though the atmosphere for the entire thing makes you feel like you're watching one of those computer gimmicks where you just KNOW something loud, big, and startling is going to spring up in your face.

You're talking about Ringu? It was really good and so was the American. Second, not as good. First originals, caaareepy.

I think The Ring is one of the only films where I prefer the remake. The original Ringu was pretty good, but Verbinski's version was a lot better and the acting (Brian Cox!) was way better. The sequel wasn't all that good, but it was ok at times.
An example of how a American remake is way worse than the originel Japanese version is The Grudge. Ju-On The Grudge and Ju-On The Grude 2 were really good, but The Grudge with Sarah Michelle Gellar was pretty lame.

I've got about five video stores around here with weird-ass movies...shouldn't be too hard to find Ringu..
